Dictionary.com announced on Wednesday that it is expanding its editorial section to incorporate new language trends driven by social media and pop culture.
In addition, the word-defining source released a list of recent trending words and terms that increased in popularity over the past several months. Trending slang terms included "smurfing," which happens when a highly skilled gamer plays under an alternate fake against lower-level players.
Searches for "smurfing" increased over 1,000% this summer. The word "pangender" was searched 553% more than usual, Dictionary.com found. And an en vogue hair color known as "blorange," a blend of blond and orange, also trended up 95%.
Here's a list of the new words and phrases added to Dictionary.com:
1. sco pa tu mana: A nonsense phrase made popular by a rap by the Ghanaian musician Patapaa. The phrase inspired the Skopatumana Challenge, where people post videos of themselves rapping Patapaa's lyrics.
2. Womyn: An alternative way of spelling women, used by some feminists to avoid the perceived sexism in the suffix "-men".
3. Smexy: A blend of smart and sexy, referring to someone who has both brains and beauty. It can also just be a fun way of calling someone sexy.
4. Hamster angle: Hamster angle is a novelty term for when a selfie makes your face look chubby, like a hamster's.
5. Yaldi: A Scottish slang interjection expressing excitement or joy.
6. Birb: Also spelled as berb, is a deliberate misspelling of bird used in internet slang such as DoggoLino. It's used as a playful way to refer to cute birds, particularly pet birds.
7. Plogging: Plogging is a Swedish exercise trend that combines jogging with picking up litter.
8. Ballmer Peak: The Ballmer Peak is a fictional level of drunkenness that supposedly heightens a computer programmer's skills.
9. Hot girl summer: Hot girl summer is a meme, originating with rapper Megan Thee Stallion, about feeling confident in you who are—and having fun and looking good while doing it. It often involves women posting selfies with summery swag and style using the caption (I heard it's) hot girl summer.
10. Passive-aggressive Daenerys: A meme featuring a still image of Daenerys Targaryen from the TV series of "Game of Thrones" with a squinting, pinched, dismissive smile. The image is humorously paired with comments made in imitation of –or in reaction to – social remarks or incidents considered passive-aggressive, judgmental, or ignorant in some way.
11. Ice cube emoji: The ice cube emoji, depicts a grayish-blue cube of frozen water. It's the perfect accompaniment to all your digital cold beverages. The ice cube emoji is also used in reference to all things cool, both literally (like the weather) and figuratively (like rapper and actor Ice Cube).
12. Flamingo emoji: Depicting a flamingo and its distinctly pink plumage and posture, the flamingo emoji is used to represent the colorful bird in various contexts. It may also be used for content associated with the tropics, such as summer fun by the pool.
13. Drop of blood emoji: Depicting a droplet of blood, the drop of blood emoji can represent all things blood-related, including bleeding from an injury, blood tests and donations, and menstruation.
